Child Psychologist
Although it may seem alarming, a very small percentage of pre-school age children struggle with depression. Some are even placed on antidepressant medication.
Since this fact is so mind boggling and little is known about depression among pre-school aged children, many opportunities exist for people interested in child psychology and childhood depression research.
Since little is known about childhood depression, it is difficult for child psychologists to accurately evaluate children with unusual symptoms. Many psychologists who claim the source of a child’s problem results from chemical imbalances frequently prescribe medication. However, this is very controversial since little research has been conducted on childhood depression.
Psychologists determining that the problem does not result from chemical imbalances usually conduct psychotherapy with the child. This enables the child to deal with painful emotional trauma which can result from divorce or abuse. More importantly, the child will develop techniques to deal with stress and enjoy a happy life.
Children struggling with depression who are not treated can struggle with it their entire lives. Consequently, they can struggle with substance abuse, suicidal thoughts, and anti-social behavior.
Child psychologists provide therapy in clinics or conduct research at universities. There are many opportunities available for child psychologists, and more importantly, the work they are a part of can help children deal with difficult problems.
