5 Tips for Choosing A Career Path

1. Look at the issues that make you crave change and outline your goals.
When making a career transition, you should first determine what has led to your unhappiness with your current situation and what you enjoy about your job. Do you not make enough money? Are you unsatisfied about your company’s management? Once you have determined why you are making a career change, develop goals and plans to reach them.

2. Work to understand your inner critic
Take some time to determine what is preventing your from reaching your career goals. Do not be paralyzed by fear. There will always be adversity while pursing your career goals.

3. Recognize recurring patterns in your life
Take some time to determine what you enjoy, and what you seek in a career and work setting. Make sure to keep a record of what you discover.

4. Network and investigate career interests that map to your goals and needs
After you have discovered what you are seeking in a job and work setting, try to locate a few careers that meet your criteria. Also take some time to meet with professionals working in careers you are considering to find out what they like and dislike about their jobs. Take time to evaluate any career meeting your criteria, so you do not rush into an unsatisfying situation.

5. Make a plan that takes your financial situation into account.
It is not easy making a career change so consider costs when making a change. You may have to go back to school, move, or acquire a loan to meet your new career objectives. Be realistic about your finances during a career transition.
